Haiti Updates

We have posted below the top critical updates directly from the church in Caneille, so you can see for yourself the hand of the Lord in the lives of our missionaries, Betty and Huguener Bastia, and what He is doing in the wake of the devastating earthquake of January 12, 2010. If you feel led to support the Bastias as they undertake the monumental task of relocating refugees to Caneille, we would ask first of all for prayer, for nothing is impossible with God. If you wish to support financially, you can send a check to Calvary Chapel of Appleton, please put in the memo “Quake Relief”.  We also accept Visa and Mastercard over the phone. All funds go directly from our bank to theirs for food, water, fuel, and various daily supplies and needs.

You can send support to:

Update with Current Needs #5

Haiti Update with Current Needs                        January 29, 2010

Here is an update on the work that the Lord has set before us at Calvary Chapel Caneille, Haiti.

Caneille is located 45 northeast of PAP and 8 miles SE of Hinche. We currently have missionaries at an established Calvary Chapel Church/School there. The pastor there is a Haitian, Huguener Bastia, who is a graduate of CC Bible College Murietta and who faithfully attended Calvary Chapel of Appleton for a couple of years prior to that. When his father, who was the previous pastor there, suddenly passed away, the Lord spoke to Bastia about taking over the pulpit in Caneille. Bastia married a gal from Calvary Chapel of Appleton, Betty is also a registered nurse. We are part of the relief efforts currently taking place, allowing refugees to flee Port au Prince and find food, water, and shelter in the outlying areas, in this case, Caneille.

Because of the land and resources we have, the Lord has given us a relief camp to oversee. We recently purchased land adjacent to where the church and parsonage are located, had it graded and leveled, and added gravel for protection during the upcoming rainy season. We already have 60 people, including families with children, who are looking to us for subsistence living. They arrived because they heard of this camp, and more show up daily.  We have stockpiled food – rice, beans, oil – and a minimal water supply. We had a well but it is nowhere near sufficient for daily needs (drinking, cooking, laundry, bathing) for even 1 family, let alone a relief camp. Our assets include a large dump truck and other transportation options,  and today we purchased as many tents as we could with the resources we have. Twenty-five disaster relief tents will be shipped to Florida today, and as we are affiliated with MFI,  they have the resources to get them into Haiti.  We are praising the Lord for this as most tents are snatched up by international organizations upon availability. You can check out what we were able to secure for tents at

http://www.shelter-systems.com/relieftents/14-relief-tent.html

Even though we have had some generous contributions, our resources are drying up. Our main need at this time is additional tents, and a water purification system.  A system that will meet our needs is  Aqua Sun International’s “Output S”.         http://www.aqua-sun-intl.com/PWP-4C.htm
It is solar powered with a backup generator option, which we can make use of, but which costs more and more to run due to the skyrocketing price of fuel, making solar the most reliable and efficient power source available to us.  This unit will purify river water as much as 1000 gallons per day. The cost of this unit is $10,000.

We also have a radio station that is 95% completed, and we wish to purchase 150 hand crank radios for distribution, which also has a built-in flashlight, much needed for a camp situation. The price for one of these radios is $21 and would enable us to bring the gospel to so many via the airwaves, as well as any type of news updates critical to the Haitian people and their situation. We are really seeing the Lord’s hand in all of this, and Betty herself said that when she saw this begin to unfold, she really felt she was seeing the fruit of so much of what the Lord had prepared them for already, in her words, ‘”for such a time as this”.

One additional need would be solar panels so they can avail themselves of this natural resource so abundant in Haiti.

We have set up a fund, “Haiti Quake Relief” for ongoing contributions. All of the latest critical updates from our missionaries on the field, including the dramatic testimony by the pastor who was in PAP at the time of the quake are included on our Calvary Appleton blog, where you can read how Pastor Bastia and his wife saw the hand of the Lord in protecting them from harm during those amazing first minutes: http://blog.ccappleton.org/ . This site also gives contribution information.

Thank you for your consideration. Please pray for the Haitian people and for the Lord to give us wisdom in all these things.

Calvary Chapel Caneille Update #4

January 28, 2010

Greetings in the Name of Jesus!

First, we want to thank each and every one of you for your prayers, encouragement, and support. We feel so blessed knowing we have so many with us.  It keeps us going.  We have been working day and night to meet the needs of the people God has entrusted to our care.

We wish to give an update on what is happening now. Many have fled Port au Prince to try to find a better life in the outlying areas.  No one in PAP sleeps in their house. All are afraid of more tremors and aftershocks. If houses have not crumbled, they are cracked and unsafe for habitation.  Belongings are still inside, and robbers are taking advantage of the situation. There are concerns about water contamination as so many have died.

Calvary Chapel Caneille Update #3

January 25, 2010

Hi,
I am writing on behalf of Bastia to give you an update.
We have about 25 people on site seeking refuge from PAP. They started coming today, and we know there will be more coming.
Bastia is continuing to prepare the purchased land. Today, the dump truck brought many loads of gravel and he had some guys out there working. Rainy season is coming and so we need to put gravel around where people will be walking, etc.
Today I put up three tents that we had here with the help of 20 Haitians.  You know how it is here – everyone is curious so they all follow you around to see what you are doing.  They thought it quite amazing that I could erect the tents. We are also housing a family of 7 in the teachers’ house. Another family just came now (9 pm) and we will put them in the radio buidling.

Calvary Chapel Caneille Update #2

January 15, 2010

Hi Everyone,

As all of you know already, it is a sad time for Haiti right now. Haiti is the poorest country in the Western hemisphere. Many have lost their homes, belongings, and worst of all, family and loved ones. Loved ones have no idea where their loved ones are – if they are alive or dead, or trapped under a structure where they may never be able to be retrieved. In Caneille where we live, and Hinche the next biggest city, there are many who have lost loved ones in the earthquake. One of our teachers got word from his brother that one of his brothers died along with a number of cousins.  Another teacher is crying continuously as her daughter lives in PAP and there is no way of having communication to know if she is dead or alive.  There are many also who have found out that their parent, brother; sister, or other friend or relative was killed in the quake. Many also are injured.

We were in PAP during the time of the earthquake to celebrate our wedding anniversary. The story of how God miraculously protected and delivered us can be found on our website:  www.cccaneille.org  We continue to thank and praise God for His sovereignty and divine intervention.
